William F. Allewelt was born on May 29, 1926 in Sacramento to William Sr. and Alta Jane Clapp Allewelt. He entered the Army Air Corps following graduation from C.K. McClatchy High School. The GI Bill brought him to the University of California, Davis where he served as editor of the Cal Aggie newspaper and as student body president.
